Teaching at UMR

I am a Student-Based Faculty member in public health at the University of Minnesota Rochester. My values and beliefs as related to teaching include the importance of undertaking challenging endeavors, providing support and helping students seek support for learning, and forming a strong sense of the "learning zone" (our place out of our comfort zone, where our learning happens -- but not so far out that we enter our panic zone where learning is reduced).

Research

My practice background is health promotion, program implementation, and program evaluation, with a health disparities focus. My research background is in LGBTQ+ health disparities and substance abuse treatment - particularly assessing factors contributing to patients’ access to care and counselor burnout. At UMR, I develop and team-teach eight courses in a strong, evolving public health curriculum with Dr. Kristin Osiecki. This variety of courses includes Introduction to Public Health, Environmental Health & Justice, Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health, Health Policy and Systems, and two EcoliteracySCHOOL: Public Health Immersive Field Experience courses (PUBH3571 and 4571). I also team teach HIST3245: Epidemics, Empires, and Environment.
